The first version of Animal Crossing for the Wii came out today! I loved it on the DS too, but it’s beautiful on the Wii and there’s some extra functionality (most of which I haven’t tried yet). I haven’t tried the online extra functionality because Nintendo is crazy protective when it comes to online play, so people can’t connect without a “friend code.” It’s ridiculous, especially since I got the Wii Speak version, in case someone else gets Animal Crossing or if there’s more games in the future that will use it. So I’m mim from Rain and my friend code is 5456-2890-2568 if anyone decides to BUY THE GAME. hint. :) If you do, come visit my town, I have apples.

A small sampling of life in Animal Crossing, so far:

This is me standing in my town, about to go fishing. :) I imported my character from my DS saved game — pretty cool stuff. It doesn’t transfer over everything, just the catalog and the face/hair, as far as I can tell.

I riled up the bees!

They’re not nice or forgiving. I shook trees and got ravaged more than once, but after the first time, figured, “Already look like Quasimodo, so may as well shake more trees.” Also, shaking trees can give you bells (money). :)

Screenshots taken from within the game — it allows you to take “photos” and save them to an SD card.

After I saw This boggles my mind on leafing through, Yut and I couldn’t stop looking at it. I made and printed out a copy on Excel and we did all the obvious stuff, then got stuck, so we did other things for a bit. But by the end of the night it was clear we weren’t gonna sleep ’til we’d figured it out, so… yeah 2 am dude! On a work night! Geez. But we did finally figure it out. And now I’m writing like the longest comment ever. (Am dork.)

So this is after all the obvious stuff is done.

The little numbers aren’t necessary, I was just desperate. Anyways, so we made a guess at a 2 and 4 where those were the only possible choices.

Yut worked it through mentally a bit in his head and thought if we put the 2 and 4 the other way, we’d just get stuck again fast, so we tried this way, and the rest of it just fell in place.

The second puzzle was the same. At some point we got stuck, this time we made a guess at the circled 1*. If we put the 1 at the other place it could’ve been, we ended up down the line with 2 fives in one column so we knew it was wrong.

But my question now is, is there a way to solve these puzzles without resorting to guessing? Something we missed maybe?

Oh and not that this matters, but if you’re wondering why one of the printouts looks so weird, it’s cos I was trying to manually duplex and I inserted the paper into the printer wrong so it basically printed on the same spot, but not exactly. :p

On another topic entirely, I’m trying out disqus for the comment system. It allows for threaded comments and whatnot, which might be cool, although I’m not totally sure that I have enough comments to really need a system. Anyways, let me know how you like it in comparison to the regular comments.

Football’s another one of those sports that I really half watch just the championship. I mean, let’s admit it, it’s a snoozefest a lot of the time, and the whole “at least the commercials are good” is less and less true. There were a couple of good-ish ads (I dunno why myspace, sheesh). I liked the Bridgestone ad with the animals the best I think, but it’s not a big deal like it was before. But this year, wow, the game was exciting — especially the last quarter, when the lead changed a bunch of times. Also, it’s nice if the team you’re rooting for (Giants for this game:p) wins in a close game, 17-14. Even though I picked the Giants basically cos they were the underdogs cos it’s funner that way. (Well maybe also cos I somehow don’t like Belichick, the Pats coach.) Yeah anyways, regardless of the reason you pick a team to root for, if you’re going to watch a sports game, pick an arbitrary (or not so arbitrary) team/person to root for cos it makes it a lot more interesting. Also, it really helps if you have a DS. Yut and I sat side by side playing Puzzle Quest, which is a game that you can look up from anytime cos it’s sorta like Bejeweled but with RPG-ish elements, so it’s better, the whole afternoon. And now there’s a brand new episode of House. Awesome. :D

Ever since misa lent us Cooking Mama: Cook Off for the Wii, Yut and I haven’t been able to cook without saying, “just like mama!” every time we do something right and “good not mine!” every time we drop something. Except we don’t really do her accent right; I dunno what that accent is, but it’s funny.

I don’t know if Cook Off is worth the full price cos there aren’t that many recipes and you can finish the game pretty fast, but if you can find it used, it’s awesome, really fun. I guess it’s pretty worth it if you want a minigame type game. It’s better than the first DS version of Cooking Mama (haven’t tried the second), cos it’s fun to do things with the wiimote. Also, the Wii version seems like it’s trying to show you how the actual cooking is done, although sometimes, chopping garlic is a step all by itself, which seems a bit silly. The DS version has a lot of weird parts during cooking, like blowing on the pot while I’m boiling pasta, stuff that’s there just to give you something to do.The DS version has way more recipes though, and it’s pretty fun too, good for a few recipes before bed. :)
